| George O'Day (1923-1987) |
O'Day's enthusiasm for racing sailboats carried him through a career as a winning America's Cup assistant helmsman (‘62, ‘67). He became a boatbuilder after winning an Olympic gold medal in the 5.5-Meter in 1960. O'Day collaborated with Uffa Fox to create and build the Day Sailer. The list of boats that O'Day built is far too long to list here, but includes the O'Day 20, 23, 27, and the Finn, Soling, and Javelin. |

This is where we've berthed since buying buying the boat in 2006. We like the Ship's Store and on-site service. Hansen's. |
Our starter boat was a 13 foot Sunfish that my mother left in the garage at The Cottage. The moment we learned to sail it, we wanted a bigger boat, and this 1977 ODay is our Bigger Boat. We're delighted with the swing keel- the boat can be trailered and stored winters on its trailer. This boat can sail very close to the wind, we know she won't turtle in a squall, and she's responsive without being twitchy. A Short List of changes to the J.Venture:
- Stripped the cabin wallpaper and painted the interior.
- Re-fabricated all the bulkheads.
- After experiencing a Cascading Mechanical Failure initiated by the Harken roller furler, we re-rigged it to a traditional headstay and hanked jib.
- Replaced the backstay and port lower shroud.
- Equipped it with newer sails.
- Repainted the bottom.
- Fresh varnish on all the teak.
- Replaced the head.
- Fabricated a cabin screen door.
- Replaced the outboard motor.
- Replaced the cabin light.
- Added a master battery switch.
TIP: When unstepping/stepping the mast, loosen the upper shroud's turnbuckle, but completely DISCONNECT the lower shrouds from the chainplate. |
